Your Alabama checklist

5 things worth doing early

When you need help

5 things Alabama freshmen figure out too late

Watch the video
  1. 1 Everyone takes UA 101

The general education requirements list "UA 101 (1 credit hour): A foundational course introducing students to the UA community and university-level learning." It is part of the core for students who started in fall 2025 or later. Make sure it is on your first-year schedule.

  2. 2 Your first term caps at 18 hours

"The maximum load for which an entering freshman or transfer student may register during the first term at The University of Alabama is 18 hours." Build your first semester at 18 hours or fewer. Heavier loads later depend on your UA hours and GPA.

  3. 3 A D will not pass freshman comp or intro math

"A grade of "C-" or higher is required in all freshman composition and introductory math courses and is a prerequisite for advancement to all higher level English and math courses at The University of Alabama." Treat those classes as C-minus-or-retake, and get help the first week you start slipping.

  4. 4 Three finals in one day? You can move one

The final exam rules cover the case where "A student has three or more exams scheduled on the same day." Then: "Exams for lower level classes have priority. For example, a 100-level course has higher priority than a 300-level course. The student should petition the 300-level course instructor for rescheduling." Check the finals schedule when the semester starts, not the week before.

  5. 5 Record the lecture — Gus makes the notes, flashcards and quiz

Gus is an AI college companion built around your actual classes. Record a lecture and it writes the notes, pulls out the key topics, builds a flashcard deck, and makes a practice quiz from what was actually said. The flashcards come back on a spaced-review schedule, so the thing you missed shows up again right before you would have forgotten it. It is free to try.

One more thing

An Incomplete turns into an F

"Grades of "IN" must be resolved by the conclusion of the subsequent regular semester, whether a student is enrolled at The University of Alabama or not, or the grade of "IN" will be changed to "F."" Set a finish date with the instructor well before then.

UA Catalog — grades, grade points and GPA

An A+ is worth 4.33, but your GPA stops at 4.0

"The plus sign added to a grade raises the points awarded by 0.33 points per hour." But: "A cumulative GPA of 4.0 is the highest GPA an undergraduate can receive."
