Your Arkansas checklist

4 things worth doing early

When you need help

5 things Arkansas freshmen figure out too late

Watch the video
  1. 1 Up to 4 D or F grades can leave your GPA

Undergraduates may improve their cumulative GPA "by requesting that the university exclude up to 4 courses taken at the UA in which a grade of “D” or “F” was received." No retake is needed, but "Grade exclusion cannot be removed or applied to another course once it has been posted." Excluded courses stop counting toward your degree too, so save the four for your worst grades and petition before you graduate.

  2. 2 One dropped class can void your 4-year plan

"Before registering for their first semester of study, all freshmen entering the university must accept participation, decline participation, or acknowledge ineligibility for participation in the DCP by signing the Participation Document." The plan ends if you do things like "Withdrawing from (“dropping”) a required course" or "Changing one’s major or degree program". If you signed up, talk to your adviser before you drop a required class or switch majors.

  3. 3 Precalc does not count for engineers

"The following courses do not count toward any degree in the College of Engineering:" MATH 11003 College Algebra, MATH 12003 Plane Trigonometry, MATH 13004 Precalculus Mathematics, and ENGL 20003 Advanced Composition. If engineering is even a maybe, ask your adviser whether you can start at Calculus.

  4. 4 The Dean’s List takes a 3.75 on 12 hours

Each college publishes "an honor roll of the names of the undergraduate students who achieve a 3.75 to 4.00 grade-point average. This honor roll is the Dean’s List." A 4.00 makes the Chancellor’s List. "Students must complete a minimum of 12 semester hours normally required to graduate and these hours must be graded with the standard letter grading basis".

  5. 5 Record the lecture — Gus makes the notes, flashcards and quiz

Gus is an AI college companion built around your actual classes. Record a lecture and it writes the notes, pulls out the key topics, builds a flashcard deck, and makes a practice quiz from what was actually said. The flashcards come back on a spaced-review schedule, so the thing you missed shows up again right before you would have forgotten it. It is free to try.

One more thing

Under a 2.0 after your first semester? You have six weeks

First-year freshmen under a 2.00 after their first semester are considered at risk: "During the first six weeks of their second semester, these at risk students must, at a minimum, consult with an academic adviser to develop a plan to get off of probation before being eligible to register for their third semester courses."

U of A Catalog — probation, suspension and dismissal

A spring suspension costs the next fall too

"a student academically suspended at the end of the spring semester would not be eligible to enroll until the next spring semester".
