Your Auburn checklist

5 things worth doing early

When you need help

5 things Auburn freshmen figure out too late

Watch the video
  1. 1 Pass/fail waits until junior year

The Bulletin: "A junior or senior with a minimum overall grade average of 2.5 on at least 20 hours of credit earned at Auburn may elect any course to be graded on the S-U option, except for courses required in the Core Curriculum" or required by the major. As a freshman, every class you take is on the letter-grade scale. Plan your first year on that assumption.

  2. 2 You get a grade before midterms

"In order to facilitate the adjustment of students to the rigors of Auburn University coursework, faculty teaching core and participating courses must formally record an early alert grade for all students enrolled in those classes prior to midterm. This process will notify students of available resources and important deadlines." It is the earliest honest signal you will get. If it is low, talk to the instructor that week.

  3. 3 Everyone takes a history or literature sequence

The Core Curriculum: "All Auburn students are required to complete a six semester credit hour sequence in either History or Literature as part of their requirements." That is two linked courses, alongside six hours of English Composition and the rest of the core. Your curriculum model shows which options your major expects.

  4. 4 Missed an exam? You have one week to ask

The class attendance policy: "Arrangement to make up missed major examinations (e.g., hour exams, midterm exams) due to properly authorized excused absences shall be initiated by the student as soon as possible but no later than one week from the end of the period of the excused absence." Instructors are expected to excuse absences for illness, a death in the immediate family, university trips and a few other reasons, and may ask for verification. Keep your documentation and email the instructor as soon as you are back.

  5. 5 Record the lecture — Gus makes the notes, flashcards and quiz

Gus is an AI college companion built around your actual classes. Record a lecture and it writes the notes, pulls out the key topics, builds a flashcard deck, and makes a practice quiz from what was actually said. The flashcards come back on a spaced-review schedule, so the thing you missed shows up again right before you would have forgotten it. It is free to try.

One more thing

Up to three D or F grades can come out of your GPA

Under Grade Adjustment, undergraduates "may delete GPA computation and credit for a maximum of three (3) grades of D or F (including FA, WF or U)". You request it through your academic dean's office before graduation; once granted it cannot be reversed, and a required course still has to be repeated.

Auburn Bulletin — grade adjustment

There is an F just for absences

Auburn's final failing grades include "FA, failure for excessive absences." Each instructor sets the attendance policy in writing at the start of the term.
