5 things worth doing early
Most classes can be dropped well into the semester. Some cannot. The Registrar: "Some courses have drop deadlines earlier than the general deadline. Early Drop Deadline classes can be dropped only through the Friday of week two of the semester." Which classes are EDD varies by college and department, so check every class on your list before the end of week two — after that, getting out of an EDD class means a late-change petition, and those are limited.
Twelve units is the number most students assume is "full time." In the College of Letters & Science the range is "a minimum of 13 units" and "a maximum of 20.5 units" per fall or spring semester. Going under 13 needs a Reduced Course Load approval. Without one, the first time gets you a warning email; doing it again puts "a hold on future registration" until you meet with an adviser. If a drop would take you to 12, add a one- or two-unit class first.
College Writing Programs: "All undergraduates must complete the R&C requirement in sequential order by the end of their fourth semester, or their enrollment will be blocked for the following semester." Part A comes before part B, so a late start pushes both. If you have not met Entry Level Writing yet, COLWRIT R1A with a C or better covers it and the first half of R&C at the same time — and "once you have started classes at Berkeley, you may not use a transfer course to satisfy Entry Level Writing."
The American Cultures requirement is the one course every Berkeley undergraduate has to pass to graduate, whatever the major or college. You satisfy it by passing an approved American Cultures course with a C- or better, or a P. Approved courses are offered in more than forty departments, and you can take one in any semester — but the campus urges you to do it as early as possible, before your schedule fills with major requirements.
Gus is an AI college companion built around your actual classes. Record a lecture and it writes the notes, pulls out the key topics, builds a flashcard deck, and makes a practice quiz from what was actually said. The flashcards come back on a spaced-review schedule, so the thing you missed shows up again right before you would have forgotten it. It is free to try.
New students can enroll in 17.5 units in Phase 1 — waitlists included
In Phase 1, new undergraduates are capped at 17.5 units, and the cap counts waitlisted units as well as enrolled ones. A long waitlist on one class can stop you from enrolling in another, so waitlist only for what you would actually take.
