Your Binghamton checklist

5 things worth doing early

When you need help

5 things Binghamton freshmen wish they knew sooner

Watch the video
  1. 1 You cannot drop your last class

"Students may drop from all but one course between the first day of classes and the announced drop deadline." And: "Students who withdraw from all courses for which they are registered at the University must follow a formal withdrawal procedure if they wish their record to indicate good standing."

  2. 2 Their class, their grading rules

"Courses are usually graded according to the offering college or school's grading system; e.g., a course offered by the School of Management is graded using the School of Management's grading system, and a Harpur College course is graded according to the Harpur system."

  3. 3 Hiding library books is sabotage

Sabotage examples include "hoarding or displacing materials within the library with the effect that others have undue difficulty using them". "This is a Category II violation." "Category II violations may result in letters of reprimand, probation, suspension or expulsion from the University, transcript notation, and/or revocation of degree or honors."

  4. 4 Business classes may not count for a BA

"Harpur College students must complete a minimum of 94 liberal arts credits for the BA, 63 for the BS, and 31 for the BFA and MusB." "Courses offered through the College of Community and Public Affairs, Decker College of Nursing and Health Sciences, School of Management, School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Thomas J. Watson College of Engineering and Applied Science, and OUT courses typically do not count toward liberal arts credit."

  5. 5 Record the lecture — Gus makes the notes, flashcards and quiz

Gus is an AI college companion built around your actual classes. Record a lecture and it writes the notes, pulls out the key topics, builds a flashcard deck, and makes a practice quiz from what was actually said. The flashcards come back on a spaced-review schedule, so the thing you missed shows up again right before you would have forgotten it. It is free to try.

One more thing

A 4 credit class means 9.5 hours of work a week

"This course is a 4-credit course, which means that in addition to the scheduled lectures/discussions, students are expected to do at least 9.5 hours of course-related work each week during the semester."

Provost — policies and procedures

Passed it? A retake keeps the old grade

"When a student repeats a course previously passed, both grades appear on the transcript, but only the first grade is counted in the GPA calculations."
