Your UB checklist

5 things worth doing early

When you need help

5 things UB freshmen figure out too late

  1. 1 Left your work out? That can be on you

"Aiding in academic dishonesty. Actions that allow another student to engage in an act of academic dishonesty, including completing an examination or assignment for another student, failing to protect academic work by leaving it unattended, or collaborating without instructor permission."

  2. 2 Know the exam format before exam day

"Criteria for the grading should be made explicit before the requirement is due; and the formats for examinations should be made explicit before their administration." And: "All corrected assignments and examinations should be available for review by students. If a student believes that an error in grading has been made, they should be able to consult with the instructor and receive an explanation."

  3. 3 Retaking MTH 141? You can be bumped

"If course demand exceeds capacity, the Registrar may drop these students from the course to accommodate first-time takers." And: "Students wishing to repeat controlled enrollment courses should plan to do so in the summer since registration for second-time takers is restricted in the fall and spring semesters." The list includes CHE 101, MTH 141, PSY 101 and other large intro courses.

  4. 4 Reading Day review? No new material

"Faculty who wish to conduct study sessions on Reading Days may do so if, and only if, these study sessions are offered on a voluntary basis, no attendance is taken, and no new information is introduced." And: "Final examinations shall be offered as officially scheduled, and not during university-sanctioned Reading Days."

  5. 5 Record the lecture — Gus makes the notes, flashcards and quiz

Gus is an AI college companion built around your actual classes. Record a lecture and it writes the notes, pulls out the key topics, builds a flashcard deck, and makes a practice quiz from what was actually said. The flashcards come back on a spaced-review schedule, so the thing you missed shows up again right before you would have forgotten it. It is free to try.

One more thing

Fail UB Seminar and you repeat it the next term

"All students are required to complete their UB Seminar during their first semester of enrollment regardless of full or part-time status." And: "Any student who fails, resigns or withdraws from the UB Seminar will be required to repeat during the next fall/spring term of attendance."

UB Catalog — UB Curriculum

An unfair grade can be grieved for a full year

"An academic grievance is a formal complaint regarding an academic decision or action, such as a grade, course requirement, or program dismissal." And: "A grievance must be filed within one calendar year from the date of the alleged offense."
