Your K-State checklist

5 things worth doing early

When you need help

5 things K-State freshmen figure out too late

Watch the video
  1. 1 Test-drive a major before you switch

"A “what if” DARS/uAchieve report can be run for any major that has been implemented in the system. The audit will then show how courses that you have already completed will be applied to a new major." Run one before you change majors.

  2. 2 Your address is public by default

Under FERPA the university can disclose directory information "to anyone inquiring without having to ask a student for permission, unless the student specifically requests in writing that all such information not be made public without written consent." Directory information includes "Local/permanent addresses and phone numbers". If you don't want that shared, file the non-disclosure request.

  3. 3 Any 100 or 200 class fills Free Electives

In the K-State Core, Free Electives are 6 credit hours, and the area "includes ALL 100-200 Level Courses at K-State or in Transfer." Use those hours on an intro class you are curious about.

  4. 4 Auditing a class? Decide by day 5

"The deadline for selecting audit status, including changing from credit to audit, must be done no later than day 5 of the semester". And: "The student may not later convert the audit into credit unless permitted under special petition and within deadlines approved by instructor and dean."

  5. 5 Record the lecture — Gus makes the notes, flashcards and quiz

Gus is an AI college companion built around your actual classes. Record a lecture and it writes the notes, pulls out the key topics, builds a flashcard deck, and makes a practice quiz from what was actually said. The flashcards come back on a spaced-review schedule, so the thing you missed shows up again right before you would have forgotten it. It is free to try.

One more thing

Only 6 transfer hours count toward a minor

"No more than six hours of transfer courses may be used for the minor."

No university events right before finals

"University-sponsored events, on- and off-campus (such as extracurricular events, social activities, athletic events, and field trips) shall not be scheduled between 24 hours before the first scheduled final examination and the end of the last scheduled final examination."
