Your Oregon checklist

5 things worth doing early

When you need help

5 things Oregon freshmen figure out too late

Watch the video
  1. 1 Your final exam time is already set

UO's exam policy: "exams are scheduled for the same time and day as the first class in a typical week. For example, if a class meets Monday, Wednesday, Friday at 9:00 a.m., the final exam would be Monday at 9:00 a.m." Check where your finals land before you register.

  2. 2 No early finals, so book flights after

"Faculty legislation prohibits the early administration of final examinations." Book trips home for after your last final; a professor cannot move it earlier for you.

  3. 3 Overlapping classes are blocked

"You can’t sign up for two classes that have a time overlap". But: "Consideration will be given if the overlap is 15 minutes or less or it is a single day overlap". File the time conflict form with both instructors before the add deadline.

  4. 4 15 credits means 45 hours a week

"To earn a degree in four years (12 terms), students should average 15 credits a term. In planning a term’s studies, students should anticipate that each credit requires at least three hours a week for class meetings or homework". Plan jobs, clubs and practice around a 45-hour school week.

  5. 5 Record the lecture — Gus makes the notes, flashcards and quiz

Gus is an AI college companion built around your actual classes. Record a lecture and it writes the notes, pulls out the key topics, builds a flashcard deck, and makes a practice quiz from what was actually said. The flashcards come back on a spaced-review schedule, so the thing you missed shows up again right before you would have forgotten it. It is free to try.

One more thing

PE, military science and dance activity credits cap at 12

"A maximum of 24 credits may be used toward fulfilling total credits in the following areas with not more than 12 credits in any one area", and physical education activity courses are one of those areas.

UO Catalog — bachelor's degree requirements

Lower-level classes can earn zero credit

"Student may not receive credit for courses that are designated by the department as regressive prerequisites for courses in which they are currently enrolled or have already received credit." Took SPAN 201? SPAN 101 earns nothing.

UO Registrar — prerequisites and course order
