Your Oregon State checklist

4 things worth doing early

When you need help

5 things Oregon State freshmen figure out too late

Watch the video
  1. 1 No exams the week before finals

Academic Regulation 16: "No final, midterm, or comprehensive examinations shall be given during the week preceding final examination week." A quarter is ten weeks plus finals, so that exam-free week is your best review time. Put it on your calendar now.

  2. 2 45 credits makes you a sophomore

Academic Regulation 4: "A student who has earned at least 45 credits is classified as a sophomore." A bachelor's degree needs a "Minimum 180 earned credits" (Academic Regulation 25). These are quarter credits, so plan on about 15 a term, every term, to finish in four years.

  3. 3 Every degree needs a world language

Academic Regulation 25: "All students receiving a bachelor’s degree must meet the world language requirement". It can be met with the equivalent of two years of high school coursework, or two college courses (8 quarter credits) with a C− or higher. Check now whether your high school classes count, so you are not adding two courses as a senior.

  4. 4 Two sciences, two different subjects

Core Education, Scientific Inquiry and Analysis: "Two courses from two different designators (subject codes) are required per Academic Regulation 25." Pair chemistry with biology or physics, not two chemistry courses, or the second one will not count toward Core Ed.

  5. 5 Record the lecture — Gus makes the notes, flashcards and quiz

Gus is an AI college companion built around your actual classes. Record a lecture and it writes the notes, pulls out the key topics, builds a flashcard deck, and makes a practice quiz from what was actually said. The flashcards come back on a spaced-review schedule, so the thing you missed shows up again right before you would have forgotten it. It is free to try.

One more thing

One Core Ed class cannot double count

"Seeking Solutions is the only Core Education category that cannot double count with major/option requirements." Save a slot for it outside your major's required list.

OSU Catalog — Seeking Solutions

Only 11 PE activity credits count

Academic Regulation 25: "Physical activity courses: maximum 11 credits." Anything past 11 does not count toward the 180.
