Your Tennessee checklist

5 things worth doing early

When you need help

5 things Tennessee freshmen figure out too late

Watch the video
  1. 1 Two bad semesters can cost your major

uTrack: "Students who are off track for two consecutive semesters will be placed on hold and required to select a new major that is better aligned with their abilities." And: "Only fall and spring semesters are tracking semesters. Mini and summer semesters are not; they provide an opportunity for students to catch up on unmet milestones."

  2. 2 One speech class is not enough

Volunteer Core: "Students satisfy this requirement by taking 1 Oral Communication (OC) course and 1 Applied Oral Communication (AOC) course. No course may be used to satisfy both the OC and AOC requirement." Check which of your major courses already carry the AOC tag.

  3. 3 Your diploma shows just one major

"A student's name, the degree awarded, and primary major are included on the diploma. Any additional majors, concentrations, and minors only appear on a student's academic transcript." And "Once a bachelor's degree has been awarded, students may not add a minor to that degree."

  4. 4 Group work without approval is plagiarism

The Honor Statement's examples of plagiarism include "Collaborating on a graded assignment without instructor's approval." Ask your professor before you work with a friend on anything graded, even homework.

  5. 5 Record the lecture — Gus makes the notes, flashcards and quiz

Gus is an AI college companion built around your actual classes. Record a lecture and it writes the notes, pulls out the key topics, builds a flashcard deck, and makes a practice quiz from what was actually said. The flashcards come back on a spaced-review schedule, so the thing you missed shows up again right before you would have forgotten it. It is free to try.

One more thing

No extra work after the final grade

"An undergraduate student may not submit additional work, rewrite an assignment, nor repeat an examination to raise a final grade."

UT Catalog — academic policies (grade changes)

Weak writing can hold any grade

If a student cannot meet a course's requirements because of an inability to communicate in writing, the instructor gives an IW, "incomplete due to writing." Use the Writing Center in every class, not just English.
