Your UCF checklist

4 things worth doing early

When you need help

5 things UCF freshmen figure out too late

Watch the video
  1. 1 Every extra credit costs double

Florida law (Statute 1009.286) makes universities add a surcharge to every credit hour taken beyond what your degree actually requires. If you started at UCF in Summer 2019 or later, the allowance is 120% of the degree and the surcharge is 100% — so on a 120-credit degree you get 144 credits, and every credit after that is billed at double. The part that catches people is what counts toward it. Not just extra electives: failed courses, hours dropped after the drop/add period, courses you withdrew from, and repeated courses all count. Transfer credits applied to your major when you were admitted count too. Which means a rough semester you withdrew from in year one, plus a major change in year two, can quietly put you over the line in year four — and the bill arrives then, not when the decision was made. What does NOT count is worth knowing too: AP, IB, AICE and dual enrollment credit, medical withdrawals and late drops, ROTC, remedial credit, internship hours, active-duty military coursework, and professional certification courses that do not apply to the degree.

  2. 2 Every spring, Universal Islands of Adventure is free

Universal Knights is a UCF Student Government event, and it is exactly what it sounds like: "Every spring semester, UCF students enjoy free, exclusive access to Universal Islands of Adventure." Exclusive meaning the park, for UCF students, not shared with the general public. Student Government also arranges complimentary self-parking in a designated garage for the night of the event — the parking pass is only valid on the day. Dates and the ticket process change year to year and are announced by Student Government, so watch their channels rather than assuming last year's arrangement holds.

  3. 3 Home games are free — but the ticket has to be claimed, and the clock is real

"Currently enrolled, full-time UCF students are granted FREE admission to all regular-season home games." Free, but not walk-up. You claim a student ticket in the UCF Gameday app or at UCFKnights.com/Login using your @ucf.edu email. Two rules do the damage. Tickets "will be allocated on a first come-first served basis" — so they run out. And even holding one: "All students holding a student ticket must be in the student line no later than 30 minutes before kickoff to ensure entry. Students arriving after the 30 minute mark will no longer be ensured a seat." If tickets are gone, standby passes open to any UCF student, admitted 30 minutes before kickoff only if the student section has not filled. UCF Online students are not eligible.

  4. 4 Your ID gets you into museums, and cheap theme park tickets

UCF students get free entry to several cultural museums, including the UCF Art Gallery and the Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center. Separately, the Student Government Ticket Center sells discounted tickets to Disney World, Universal Orlando and the Kennedy Space Center — which in Orlando is the difference between going and not going. Student Government also runs a free three-course Gather Luncheon in spring, provides free scantrons across campus, and operates All-Knight Study, a study space open 24 hours.

  5. 5 Record the lecture. Gus writes it down.

This is the part students actually use most: hit record at the start of class and Gus gives you back a timestamped transcript, a summary, and the key topics the lecture covered — so "what did he say about that" stops being a guess. The transcript is where it starts, not where it ends: from that same lecture you can generate flashcards, a practice quiz, or a podcast to listen to on the shuttle. It works on a phone in your pocket, and it keeps working if the lecture runs long.

One more thing

Before you withdraw from anything, check your excess hours

The surcharge is the one item on this page that compounds silently. UCF publishes worked examples showing how the total is calculated, and an appeal form exists for circumstances outside your control. If you are contemplating a second major change, or a withdrawal in a heavy semester, it is worth doing the arithmetic first rather than finding out in your final year. Questions go to excesshours@ucf.edu.
