Your UCLA checklist

5 things worth doing early

When you need help

5 things UCLA freshmen wish they knew sooner

Watch the video
  1. 1 AP credit cannot cover your GEs

"Students may not use Advanced Placement (AP) Examination credit to satisfy the College 10-course foundational area general education requirement." That is the College of Letters and Science. AP can still give you units and some major prep, so ask your adviser what yours covers.

  2. 2 Every waitlist dies Friday of week 2

"At 11:59 p.m. on Friday of the second week of instruction the study list of enrolled courses becomes official, and all wait lists are eliminated." Same page: "Position on a wait list does not indicate enrollment."

  3. 3 Hold a class seat for a friend? Banned

The Student Conduct Code (102.23d) lists "Using open enrollment periods to enroll oneself in a course and maintaining enrollment in that course for the purposes of holding enrollment for another individual, or otherwise trading, selling, or bartering the enrollment in the course to another individual."

  4. 4 A C- or a D needs a C+ to offset it

"The grades C− through D- yield unit credit but may not satisfy certain scholarship requirements. Even when they do, they must be offset by grades of C+ or better in other courses."

  5. 5 Record the lecture — Gus makes the notes, flashcards and quiz

Gus is an AI college companion built around your actual classes. Record a lecture and it writes the notes, pulls out the key topics, builds a flashcard deck, and makes a practice quiz from what was actually said. The flashcards come back on a spaced-review schedule, so the thing you missed shows up again right before you would have forgotten it. It is free to try.

One more thing

No final can run past three hours

"Final written examinations may not exceed three hours' duration, and are given only at the times and places established and published by the department chair and the Registrar's Office."

UCLA General Catalog — examinations

Enrollment bots break the conduct code

The Student Conduct Code counts as computer misuse the "use of either software or physical devices to enroll in classes for yourself or on behalf of others using processes other than those specifically delineated by the UCLA Registrar's Office".
