5 things worth doing early
Student Financial Aid: "HOPE Scholarship recipients must maintain a 3.00 HOPE GPA. Zell Miller Scholarship Recipients must maintain a 3.30 Zell Miller Scholarship GPA." The check happens "at 30, 60, and 90 attempted hours, as well as every Spring semester." The asymmetry is the part to know: you can lose the scholarship at a spring check, but you can only regain it at the 30, 60 or 90 attempted-hour checkpoints. And "a HOPE or Zell Miller Scholarship recipient who has lost their Scholarship eligibility at two checkpoints cannot regain eligibility." The award runs "through 127 HOPE Attempted or Paid hours, whichever comes first." Know where your 30th attempted hour lands — it is usually the end of freshman year.
Among UGA's university-wide degree requirements: first-time bachelor's students "must pass one semester credit hour of basic physical education", any course from PEDB 1010 to PEDB 1990. It is one credit, and it is easy to forget until senior year when the seats you want are gone. Take it early, while your schedule has room.
"All first-year undergraduate students who matriculate fall semester 2011 and thereafter must successfully complete one First-Year Odyssey Seminar by the end of their first year in residence." There are over 300 seminars with 15 to 18 students each. It is one of the few first-year classes small enough that the professor will know your name — pick one you actually want.
"All first-year and transfer undergraduate students who matriculate fall semester 2016 and thereafter are required to complete at least one experiential learning activity before graduation." It can be Creative, Global, Internship, Leadership, Research, or Service-Learning. A lot of students meet it through something they were going to do anyway — a lab position, a study-abroad term, an internship — but it has to be an approved activity, so check before you assume it counts.
Gus is an AI college companion built around your actual classes. Record a lecture and it writes the notes, pulls out the key topics, builds a flashcard deck, and makes a practice quiz from what was actually said. The flashcards come back on a spaced-review schedule, so the thing you missed shows up again right before you would have forgotten it. It is free to try.
You also have to pass a history and a constitution exam
Every bachelor's candidate must pass examinations on United States and Georgia history and on the United States and Georgia constitutions, unless exempted by designated history or political science courses. Check which of your courses exempts you before you assume it is handled.
