Your UIC checklist

5 things worth doing early

When you need help

5 things UIC freshmen figure out too late

  1. 1 Animals in a class? Ask before you enroll

"Students who have ethical concerns about the use of animals in teaching have the responsibility to contact the instructor, prior to enrollment in any course in which animals may be used as part of course instruction, to determine whether class exercises involving animals are optional or required, and what alternatives, if any, are available. If no alternatives are available, the refusal to participate in required activities involving animals may result in a failing grade in the course."

  2. 2 Double major? Both in one college

"To double major, students must complete all of the requirements for two majors within one college." "Double degrees can be within one college or across two colleges." "Double degrees require a minimum of 30 additional semester hours beyond those required for the first degree."

  3. 3 Only 2 major classes count as Gen Ed

"Note: Students may count up to two courses in their major toward their General Education requirements. If students have a double major, then two courses from each of the majors may be applied toward General Education."

  4. 4 Course below 100? No graduation credit

"Courses numbered 001–099 do not carry academic credit but meet special program requirements." "Note: Courses numbered 001–099 do not carry credit toward graduation. Grades for these courses are not calculated in the GPA."

  5. 5 Record the lecture — Gus makes the notes, flashcards and quiz

Gus is an AI college companion built around your actual classes. Record a lecture and it writes the notes, pulls out the key topics, builds a flashcard deck, and makes a practice quiz from what was actually said. The flashcards come back on a spaced-review schedule, so the thing you missed shows up again right before you would have forgotten it. It is free to try.

One more thing

Wrong final grade? Corrections close after two years

"Changes/corrections to final grades are permitted up to two years after recording the final grade in a student’s academic record so long as the course instructor, department chair/head, and college office approve of the change/correction. No grade changes/corrections are allowed after the two-year time limitation."

Fail a proficiency exam and no record is made

"The grade given in proficiency examinations is either “pass” or “fail” but a student does not receive a “pass” unless at least the equivalent of a C is earned. Neither grade is included in the computation of the student’s average; no official record is made of a “fail.”"
