5 things worth doing early
Undergraduate Academic Affairs: "Course Request is not first come, first-served. Students can build their course priorities at any time during the course request period and will still get the same results." "When Course Request closes, the Hokie Registration system will place students into courses. Students may get some or all of the courses they requested during this phase." Then add/drop opens and registration is live. So do not stay up to submit at midnight — spend the time on your priorities and backups instead, and be ready for add/drop.
The Pass/Fail option is open to undergraduates who have completed at least 30 credit hours at Virginia Tech with an overall GPA of 2.00 or above. "Students may take up to 12 credits hours of coursework as Pass/Fail", with a maximum of "two (2) courses per semester" (courses only offered P/F do not count). Required courses for Pathways general education, your major or your minor cannot be taken P/F unless that is the only way they are offered. A P means a D or better.
Student Academic Advising: the W grade policy "can be used for no more than three (3) courses during your entire academic career at VT." You request it through your advising office by the last day of classes of the term, and the course "will not count in the GPA hours nor in any GPA calculations." The decision is irrevocable and does not refund tuition. Three is not many across four years — use one when a class is genuinely beyond saving, not as a habit.
Virginia law caps in-state tuition at 125% of the credit hours your degree needs. The Registrar's example: a 120-hour Bachelor of Science has a threshold of 150 attempted hours. Past it, in-state students "will be assessed a surcharge for each semester of continued enrollment after exceeding the credit hour threshold." All attempted hours count, including in-progress courses and transfer credit from Virginia public institutions. Credit for AP, IB, credit by exam, and high-school dual enrollment is subtracted. Double majors and options do not raise the threshold.
Gus is an AI college companion built around your actual classes. Record a lecture and it writes the notes, pulls out the key topics, builds a flashcard deck, and makes a practice quiz from what was actually said. The flashcards come back on a spaced-review schedule, so the thing you missed shows up again right before you would have forgotten it. It is free to try.
