5 things worth doing early

When you need help

5 things WMU freshmen figure out too late

Watch the video
  1. 1 12 credits and 15 credits cost exactly the same

WMU charges flat-rate tuition across a band, not per credit hour. The 2026-27 cost-of-attendance page puts it plainly: rates are "based on the flat-rate tuition policy of 12-15 credit hours per semester on Main Campus". So a 12-credit schedule and a 15-credit schedule cost the same money. That is three credits a semester you are entitled to and most first-years never take — over eight semesters it is 24 credits, close to a full extra year of school, for nothing. The exception matters and is not small: the flat rate does NOT apply to students in the Haworth College of Business, the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, or the College of Fine Arts. Check which rate table you are on before you build a schedule around this. Worth saying out loud: 15 credits is more work than 12, and the right number depends on your term. The point is that the decision should be about your workload, not about money you assumed you were saving.

  2. 2 Home games are free — but the ticket still has to be claimed

"Admission is still free for WMU students to attend all home games." The part people miss is the next sentence: "Students should reserve their ticket in advance of each home game." WMU Athletics runs student admission on digital tickets for every ticketed home event, delivered to your phone. Turning up at the gate without having reserved one is how people end up outside. The timing differs by sport, which is the other thing that catches people: for football, reservations open the Monday TWO WEEKS before each home game at 10 a.m.; for every other sport, the Monday of game week at 10 a.m. Popular games do run out. One caveat from their own page: Athletics reserves the right to charge students for post-season games hosted on campus where conference rules require it.

  3. 3 Your Bronco Card is a bus pass for the whole city

Transportation puts it in one line: "You always have a ride with your WMU Bronco Card. It is your ticket to many Kalamazoo areas, grocery stores, the mall and downtown." That is not just the campus shuttles. Show the Bronco Card to the driver as you board at the front, and you ride any route on the Kalamazoo Metro system at no charge — so a grocery run, a shift at an off-campus job, an apartment viewing or a night downtown costs you nothing. On the campus side the same card covers the #19 Ring Road loop, the #25 Parkview run to the College of Engineering, and the Aviation Shuttle out to Battle Creek. You do need the physical card — a photo of it will not get you on.

  4. 4 There is a food pantry in Faunce, and your ID is the whole process

Montgomery Essential Needs — the programme that started life as the Invisible Need Project in 2014 — runs a food pantry in the Kiva Room, 1000 Faunce Student Services, reached by its own entrance at the centre rear of the building near the Seita Scholars offices. Any currently registered WMU student can use it. There is no application and no means test; the one hard requirement is your Bronco ID, and their page is blunt about it: "Students who do not bring their ID will not be able to check in or receive food." Students may visit once every 14 days, so they can reach as many people as possible. It stocks frozen and shelf-stable food, some fresh items, and a range of personal care products — stock varies week to week because it runs on donations. The separate entrance is deliberate. Nobody watches you walk in.

  5. 5 Record the lecture. Gus writes it down.

This is the part students actually use most: hit record at the start of class and Gus gives you back a timestamped transcript, a summary, and the key topics the lecture covered — so "what did he say about that" stops being a guess. The transcript is where it starts, not where it ends: from that same lecture you can generate flashcards, a practice quiz, or a podcast to listen to on the #19. It works on a phone in your pocket, and it keeps working if the lecture runs long.

One more thing

The one we cut: retaking a course can lower your GPA

WMU counts only the most recent grade for a repeated course — which cuts both ways, exactly as it does at Grand Valley. Retake a C and finish with a D, and the D is the grade in your GPA. The exception is that a W, CR or NC on the second attempt does not replace the earlier letter grade. And many graduate and professional schools recalculate your GPA using every attempt, so a repeat that fixed your WMU number may not fix theirs. We left it out of the video only because the Grand Valley video used the same tip the day before.

Also worth knowing

Counselling at Sindecuse Health Center is no charge to enrolled students, and every WMU student is eligible for care there whether they are insured or not. We keep this off the videos on purpose — a six-second caption is the wrong place to introduce mental-health support — but it is one of the most valuable things on this list.
