Your WSU checklist

5 things worth doing early

When you need help

5 things WSU freshmen figure out too late

Watch the video
  1. 1 Pass/fail will not fill a UCORE

Rule 50: "Courses carrying a UCORE designation can be taken for a pass, fail (P, F) grade, but the pass, fail grade will not satisfy a UCORE requirement." Pass/fail is for electives. The same rule caps it: "The university allows up to 21 credits to be taken at WSU on a pass, fail basis by students completing a baccalaureate degree at Washington State University."

  2. 2 Your exam can be at 8 p.m. on a Tuesday

Rule 80: "Up to four common examinations may be scheduled outside the official class meeting time each semester." The allowed evening slots include "Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday: 7:00 to 8:00 a.m.; 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.; and 8:00 to 10:00 p.m." Put those dates in your calendar when the syllabus comes out, before you plan work shifts.

  3. 3 Hate a syllabus rule? You have 5 days

Rule 104: "For concerns on course policies as outlined in the course syllabus, the concern should be emailed to the instructor within 5 business days after the first day of class instruction". Read every syllabus in the first week, while you can still raise it.

  4. 4 Save your best papers for year two

The University Writing Portfolio "is a WSU graduation requirement and is due during the term in which you have 60 credits (or before)." You submit two papers "that you've written for college-level courses that you think demonstrate your best writing." And: "Holds will be placed on student accounts with 60+ credits for students who have not completed the requirement." Keep your graded freshman papers.

  5. 5 Record the lecture — Gus makes the notes, flashcards and quiz

Gus is an AI college companion built around your actual classes. Record a lecture and it writes the notes, pulls out the key topics, builds a flashcard deck, and makes a practice quiz from what was actually said. The flashcards come back on a spaced-review schedule, so the thing you missed shows up again right before you would have forgotten it. It is free to try.

One more thing

Not on the roster after the second Friday? You cannot sit in

Rule 71: "Students are not permitted to attend a class past the second Friday of the semester (census day), or past the add deadline for shorter academic sessions, without being on the official class roster."

WSU Academic Regulations (Rule 71)

A wrong final grade has a 10-day window

Rule 104: "For final grades, the concern must be emailed to the instructor within 10 business days of the final grading deadline and posting to the transcript."
